What to expect

Grow phases

  • Primordia The white mycelium spreads through the block, turning it solid and ready for fruiting. This is how your capsule will look like on arrival

  • Pinning (1–2 weeks) – Tiny knots form on the surface — the first signs of Reishi “baby antlers.”

  • Option 1: Maturing "Antlers" (4–8 weeks)  Slender, finger-like stems grow upward. They can get quite tall and colorful.

  • Option 2: Maturing "conks" (, 4–8 weeks) The antlers widen into flat, varnished shelves called conks. These take patience, but develop the iconic flat Reishi look.

  • Ready to harvest (~ 8 weeks) – Fully grown antlers or conks harden and develop their deep red-brown, lacquered surface.

Harvest

  • Harvest when the antlers or conks have fully developed their deep red-brown, varnished surface. They should feel firm and woody.

  • Use a clean knife or garden shears to cut the whole antler or conk at its base, close to the block.

  • Reishi is tough but can crack if forced. Cut cleanly instead of pulling.

Second harvest

  • After the first harvest,  Gently remove leftover stem bases or debris from the block’s surface.

  • Reishi is slow-growing. New pins may take over 2 weeks to appear, with the second flush developing more gradually than the first.

Burying your capsules

  • Once your capsule has stopped producing mushrooms, remove it from the bag.

  • Break it up into smaller chunks to help it blend with the soil.

  • Bury the pieces a few centimeters deep in a shady, moist spot in your garden or compost.

  • Keep the area lightly watered, the mycelium will enrich your soil and may even surprise you with a few more mushrooms outdoors.
